Knowledge Management Periodicals
Journals, Magazines and Newsletters
1997 saw a surge of new magazines and journals, vying to match the few already well established. However, as the years have passed, so have many of the pioneering publications, such as Knowledge Management Magazine (2 titles) and Knowledge Inc., and as recently as 2008, Knowledge Management Review from Melcrum. In recent years the growth has been in peer-reviewed academic journals. Below we list those of most value to KM practitioners and general managers.
Our Gold Star Winners
Inside Knowledge, Ark Group. Evolving from a merger of Ark's Knowledge Management and Enterprise Information magazines, each issue has news updates, feature articles and several case studies. 10 issues a year. Full online access to archives. Annual subscription £345 or £245 (online only).
KM World, Information Today Inc. A monthly in newspaper style format. Lots of general KM news but with a definite US and technology slant. T here are regular surveys, such as the annual 100 companies that matter in knowledge management (2011). Best for news, since its website is updated almost daily. 10 issues a year. Free to USA readers. Rest of World: $101 to $269 depending on location or read most articles online for free.
The Best of The Rest
FAST (Magazine). Of the general management periodicals, this I feel has a much higher proportion of articles with a knowledge slant than any others I know. If you know different, then please let me know! Full text online or $12.97 for 10 hard-copy issues a year.
Managing Information, Aslib. Although it's focus is information, there are frequently articles with a more KM slant.
Monthly. Annual subscription: £169.
For The Academically Inclined
These journals are peer reviewed and written in academic style (lots of background literature citations) but often surprise practitioners with their knowledge gems. Although more pricey (generally, but not always) than magazines, many publishers offer downloads of individual articles, which is more cost-effective for that occasional need.
Journal of Information & Knowledge Management., World Scientific Publishing. This is the official pubication of iKMS (the Information and Knowledge Management Society).
Many articles are theoretical, interspered with interesting surveys and occasional case studies. David Skyrme is on the editorial board. More modestly priced - and therefore better value - than our next entry.
Quarterly. $88 (individual); $175 (institution).
Journal of Knowledge Management. Started in September 1997, this journal is a blend of case studies and serious articles. Taken over from its creators (IFS International) by Emerald Publications (formerly MCB Press)
in 1999, it is still edited by its orginal editor Rory Chase. Good but dense reading, with occasional special issues devoted to a single topic, such as Knowledge for Development.
However, since it went to this academic publisher, it's price has risen 8-fold and therefore generally needs an academic library for access.
6 issues/year. £1559. $2559.
International Journal of Learning and Intellectual Capital, Inderscience. Compact in size, this relatively recent (2003) journal covers a broad spectrum of topics on the knowledge-based firm. There are a good many case studies and useful charts that sets this journal apart from its more academic rivals.

International Journal of Knowledge Management Studies, Inderscience. Launched in 2007, this companion journal (to the one above) is more focused and has a good mix of ground-breaking empirical research and company case studies.Compact in size, this relatively recent (2003) journal covers a broad spectrum of topics on the knowledge-based firm. There are a good many case studies and useful charts that sets this journal apart from its more academic rivals.
If the standard of the first issue is maintained, then this could become the academic journal of choice for practitioners. David Skyrme is on the editorial board.
